Canada’s 2026 Gun Ban Deadline: What Owners Must Know

Ar Rifle over a Map of Canada with a Countdown to the October Gun Amnesty Deadline

Hey everyone. I’ve spent my life around firearms—from my time in the military to competitive shooting. If you follow international gun news, you’ve probably heard about what’s happening up in Canada. The government is pushing hard to get rid of "assault-style" rifles.

The date everyone is watching? October 30, 2026. That is the final deadline. After that, owning thousands of different semi-auto rifles will become a crime in Canada.

How Did This Happen?

Canada has had strict laws for a long time, but things changed fast in 2020. According to Public Safety Canada, the government banned over 2,500 types of guns, including the AR-15 and many others they think look too "military." Then, in 2022, they froze handgun sales.

They started a "buyback" program where owners could tell the government they had these guns and get paid to turn them in. But there’s a problem:

  • The Numbers: Only about 67,000 guns were signed up. Experts think there are hundreds of thousands more out there.
  • The Pushback: Some police departments and provinces don't want to help. Gun rights groups like the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR) are fighting back in court.

    The Deadline: October 30, 2026

If you didn't sign up for the buyback by this past March, you won't get paid. But the law doesn't care. By October 30, owners have to do one of three things:

    1. Destroy the gun (and pay for it themselves).
    2. Give it to the police for free.
    3. Ship it out of the country if they can. (If you are looking to legally transfer or export, check out how to sell your guns legally to get the best value).

If you still have one on October 31, you could lose your license or go to jail. The government has moved this deadline before, but they say this is the "end of the line."

    What "Seizing" Really Looks Like

The government isn't kicking down doors yet. For now, they are asking people to make appointments to hand over their guns. But if people don't follow the rules, critics worry about what comes next.

As a gun guy, I see the real issue: these aren't "weapons of war." They are modern sporting rifles. They are semi-autos used for target practice or hunting. They don't fire faster than any other hunting rifle; they just look different.

    Why Americans Should Care

I’m not Canadian, but I believe gun rights are human rights. What's happening in Canada shows a pattern:

    • First, the government makes a list (Registration).
    • Then, they use that list to say certain guns are illegal (Banning).
    • Finally, they tell you to hand them over or go to jail (Confiscation).

In Canada, most crime happens with handguns smuggled across the border, not with a farmer’s sporting rifle. Banning these guns doesn't stop the bad guys—it only hurts the people who follow the law. This is exactly why American gun owners need to stay informed and know the true value of their firearms. Whether you are buying or selling, always use a trusted licensed FFL gun buyer.

    Final Thoughts

If you’re in Canada: Don't wait until the last minute. Know your rights and keep an eye on the court cases.

If you're in the U.S.: This is why we protect our rights so closely. One pen stroke can turn a law-abiding owner into a criminal overnight. If you ever decide you want to thin out your collection before laws change, joining a live gun auction is a great way to ensure you get top dollar from buyers across the country.
